    Living with Vulvodynia

Vulvodynia can affect women of all ages and ethnicities.

Vulvodynia accounts for 10 million doctor visits/year.

Upwards of 14 million women are affected in their lifetime.

40% of women with vulvodynia choose not to seek treatment (2).

Of those seeking treatment, 60% see three or more clinicians (2).

Of women seeking treatment, the majority of clinicians do not provide a diagnosis to the woman (1).

  • Imagine living your life in constant pain. Giving up physical activities —. It’s a reality for who is living with the condition known as vulvodynia.

. During those years, her  relationships deteriorated and she became increasingly frustrated when doctors couldn’t nail down the exact cause of her chronic pain.

Until recently, doctors didn’t recognize vulvodynia — characterized by chronic vulvar pain — as a real condition. Although many strides have been made to treat the thousands of women suffering from this syndrome, many still do not receive the proper diagnosis.

    What is vulvodynia?

In most women with the condition, the appearance of the vulva is normal and the problem lies with the nerve fibres. Although the pain may be felt inside the organ, the problem's actually on the outside.

The sensory nerve endings appear to become so sensitive that even light touching of the skin triggers an unpleasant and painful sensation. Also called small fiber neuropathy.

    Symptoms

The most common symptoms are burning, stinging, irritation, aching or rawness of the genital area. The pain may be constant or it may only occur intermittently - when the vulva is touched, for example. The pain may also be felt around the urethra, back passage, tops of the legs and inner thighs.

Each woman can have different symptoms, with varying degrees of severity.

As with most chronic pain conditions, vulvodynia adversely affects quality of life. Not only can it prevent women from engaging in and enjoying sexual activity, but daily activities may also be impaired. Some women with vulvodynia are unable to exercise, for example, or drive a car. For some, even sitting becomes a challenge.

When a condition has a detrimental impact on work, family and social life, low self-esteem, poor self-image and depression often develop. This can exacerbate the symptoms, dragging the woman into a negative downward spiral.

    Causes and risk factors

This is a autoimmune nerve disorder called CIDP  small fiber neuropathy, which means it's REVERSIBLE . Some theories are that thrush, E.coli or Herpes  may trigger it.

It's estimated that up to 15 per cent of women suffer with vulvodynia. It can be reversed by IVIg treatment. The test IgG level and IgG level sub-class is important to do.
